Estimate your federal and state income tax for 2026 (also 2024 and 2025). Supports all filing statuses and standard deductions.
An income tax calculator estimates how much federal (and sometimes state) tax you owe based on your income, filing status, deductions, and credits. It applies the selected year's progressive tax brackets — 2024, 2025, or 2026 — to your taxable income to compute your total tax, effective rate, and marginal rate. Use it to plan withholding, predict your refund or balance due, and compare the effect of a raise or deduction before you file.

The US uses a progressive tax system where higher income is taxed at higher rates.
Your income up to the standard deduction amount is not taxed (${DEDUCTIONS_BY_YEAR[input.year]?.single ?? 15000} single, ${DEDUCTIONS_BY_YEAR[input.year]?.married ?? 30000} married in 2025).
Your marginal rate is the highest bracket you reach; your effective rate is total tax divided by income.
Type your annual gross income from wages, self-employment, investments, or retirement. Include all sources for the most accurate estimate.
Choose single, married filing jointly, or head of household. We use 2025 IRS brackets and the standard deduction for your status.
Enter pre-tax deductions (401k, HSA) and tax credits (child tax credit, education credit). The calculator adjusts your taxable income and final tax.

How it works
Our income tax calculator lets you estimate your annual tax bill or your marginal and effective tax rate, in five steps.
Choose single, married filing jointly, married filing separately, or head of household. The 2025 brackets and standard deduction differ for each.
Type your expected taxable income for the year. This is gross income minus pre-tax deductions like 401(k) and HSA. Use last year's AGI as a starting point if unsure.
Select your state to include state income tax. The calculator uses a flat state rate for states without a graduated bracket; for those with brackets, it estimates using your income level.
Choose standard (default, easier) or itemized (if you have significant mortgage interest, state taxes, or charitable donations). The calculator subtracts the deduction to find taxable income.
The result shows your federal tax, state tax, total tax, marginal rate (rate on your next dollar), and effective rate (total tax divided by income).
