Add or remove sales tax from any amount for all 50 US states and any custom local rate.
Enter price and tax rate
Each US state sets its own sales tax rate, ranging from 0% (DE, MT, NH, OR) to over 7%.
Counties and cities can add local sales tax on top of the state rate, pushing combined rates higher.
The average combined state and local sales tax rate in the US is around 6-10% depending on location.
Type the pre-tax price. This is the amount before any sales tax is added, usually shown as the subtotal on a receipt.
Select your state from the dropdown. The calculator uses the most recent combined state and average local sales tax rate.
Switch between Add Tax (to compute the total with tax included) and Remove Tax (to extract the pre-tax price from a tax-inclusive total).

A sales tax calculator is a free tool that adds or removes sales tax from a purchase amount using any US state rate. Our sales tax calculator works for all 50 states and supports custom rates for cities and counties that stack. The sales tax calculator is useful for budgeting, invoicing, and verifying charges on receipts.
How it works
Our sales tax calculator lets you add state and local sales tax to a base price, or strip tax out of a tax-inclusive total, in three steps.
Type the price you are working with. If you have a pre-tax price, the calculator adds tax. If you have a tax-inclusive total (common in Europe and on receipts), it strips tax out.
Select your US state from the dropdown. The calculator uses the current state tax rate plus an average local rate. Override the rate manually for a specific jurisdiction.
The result shows the tax amount, the new total, and the effective rate. If you entered a tax-inclusive total, it also shows the pre-tax base.
