Most US workers see 20-35% total withholding: 10-15% federal income tax, 0-10% state income tax (TX/FL zero, CA/NY high), 7.65% FICA, plus pre-tax benefit deductions. A $60,000 salary in Texas takes home ~$46,500; the same salary in California takes home ~$42,000. Our paycheck calculator breaks down each tax line so you can see exactly where the money goes.
How it works
Our paycheck calculator lets you calculate net pay from gross pay across all US pay frequencies, with federal, state, FICA, and pre-tax deductions, in four steps.
Type the pre-deduction amount on a single paycheck. If you know your annual salary, divide by the number of pay periods (52 weekly, 26 biweekly, 24 semi-monthly, 12 monthly). Example: $75,000 annual / 26 biweekly = $2,884.62 per check.
Select how often you are paid (weekly, biweekly, semi-monthly, monthly) and your IRS filing status (single, married filing jointly, head of household). The calculator uses this to annualize your income and apply the correct tax brackets.
Select your state to apply state income tax (TX, FL, AK, NV, WA, WY, SD, NH have no state income tax). Add any pre-tax deductions: 401k, traditional IRA, health insurance premium, HSA, FSA, etc. These reduce taxable wages and lower your tax withholding.
The result shows gross pay, federal tax, state tax, Social Security, Medicare, total deductions, and net take-home. It also shows your effective tax rate and the annual equivalent. Use this to compare job offers, plan budgets, or check if your W-4 is set correctly.
