Monthly Payment Formula & Example

The amortizing loan payment formula, written two ways. They are the same equation:

M = P × r × (1 + r)^n ÷ ((1 + r)^n − 1)
M = P × r ÷ (1 − (1 + r)^-n)

P = principal borrowed
r = monthly interest rate (annual rate ÷ 12)
n = total number of monthly payments (term in months)

To calculate, get or find a monthly payment by hand, work in this order:

  1. Divide the APR by 12 to get the monthly rate: 6% APR → 0.06 ÷ 12 = 0.005.
  2. Convert the term to months: 3 years → 36 months.
  3. Compute (1 + r) raised to n: (1.005)^36 ≈ 1.19668.
  4. Multiply: P × r × 1.19668 ÷ (1.19668 − 1).
Example: P = $10,000, APR = 6% → r = 0.005, n = 36 → M ≈ 10,000×0.005×(1.005)^36/((1.005)^36−1) ≈ $304.22

Quick Answer: Monthly Payment on Common Loans

As a rule of thumb, every 1% lower APR saves roughly 2–3% of the loan amount in total interest over a 5-year term — on the $25,000 row above, dropping from 7% to 6% cuts total interest from $4,701.80 to $3,999.20. Doubling the term from 3 to 6 years cuts the monthly payment by roughly 45% but roughly doubles total interest paid ($2,789.39 → $5,688.21 on the same $25,000 at 7%).

How to Calculate a Monthly Loan Payment — Direct Answers

How do I calculate my monthly loan payment?
Use M = P × r ÷ (1 − (1 + r)^−n), where P is the amount borrowed, r is the APR ÷ 12, and n is the term in months. A $25,000 loan at 7% for 60 months comes to $495.03/mo. The calculator above does it for any combination.
What is the monthly payment on a $22,000 loan at 8.99% for 60 months?
$456.58/mo, with $5,394.62 of total interest over five years. At 7% the same loan is $435.63/mo; at 6% it is $425.32/mo.
What is the monthly payment on a $70,000 loan?
Over 5 years: $1,386.08/mo at 7% APR, $1,419.35/mo at 8%, and $1,353.30/mo at 6%. Over 10 years at 7% it drops to $812.76/mo but total interest rises to $27,531.
How do I get a monthly payment figure for a loan repayment?
Three inputs are enough: the amount you borrowed, the APR, and the term. Enter them in the calculator above and it returns the monthly payment, the total interest, and the full amortization schedule — including how much of each payment is principal versus interest.
How do I find the monthly payment if I know the interest rate and term?
Use the same formula in reverse. A $1,000/mo payment at 6% for 60 months supports a principal of about $51,726; the same payment at 9% supports $48,173. More rate means less principal for the same payment.
What is a loan repayment calculator?
A loan repayment calculator is a free tool that works out the monthly payment and total interest on an amortizing loan. This one handles personal, auto, student and mortgage loans, takes a down payment, and prints the full amortization schedule with no signup.

What is a loan payment?

A loan payment is the fixed amount you pay a lender each month to repay borrowed money plus interest. The size of the payment depends on three things: the principal (amount borrowed), the annual interest rate, and the loan term in months. Whether you want to figure out a monthly payment, work out the total interest, or compare two loan offers, the standard amortization formula M = P × r(1+r)^n / ((1+r)^n − 1) gives the answer for mortgages, auto loans, student loans, and personal loans alike.

How Loan Payments are Calculated

1

Loan Amount

We calculate the principal by subtracting your down payment from the total loan amount.

2

Monthly Payment

Using the principal, interest rate, and term, we calculate your fixed monthly payment.

3

Amortization

Each payment is split between principal and interest, with early payments going more toward interest.

What factors affect your loan payment?

  • Loan Amount: The total amount you're borrowing after down payment
  • Interest Rate: Higher rates mean higher monthly payments and more total interest
  • Loan Term: Longer terms have lower monthly payments but more total interest
  • Down Payment: Larger down payments reduce your loan amount and monthly payment

A loan payment calculator is a free tool that estimates the monthly payment, total interest, and total cost for any fixed-rate installment loan. Our loan payment calculator works for personal loans, mortgages, auto loans, and student loans. How it works

How to calculate monthly loan payments

Our loan payment calculator estimates your monthly payment, total interest, and full repayment schedule in four quick steps.

  1. 1

    Enter the loan amount

    Type the total amount you want to borrow in the Loan Amount field. This is the principal before any down payment.

  2. 2

    Enter the interest rate

    Type the annual interest rate (APR) as a percentage, for example 6.5. The calculator converts it to a monthly rate automatically.

  3. 3

    Enter the loan term

    Type the loan length in years, for example 30 for a 30-year loan. The calculator multiplies by 12 to get the number of monthly payments.

  4. 4

    Add a down payment if applicable

    If you are paying part of the price up front, type that amount in the Down Payment field. The monthly payment is calculated on the principal minus down payment.

  5. 5

    Read the result

    The calculator shows the monthly payment, total interest, total cost, and an amortization schedule for the first 12 months.
