How our discount calculator works

Type the original, pre-discount price. This is the list price or the price before any sale discount is applied.

Type the discount as a percentage. Common retail discounts are 10%, 20%, 25%, 30%, or 50% off.

See final price and amount saved

Get the sale price, the dollar amount saved, and the effective percentage off (which is slightly different for stacked discounts).

Key things to know about our discount calculator:

  • Stacked discounts: 20% off then 10% off is not 30% off. Its 1 - (0.8 x 0.9) = 0.28, or 28% off. Use the discount calculator to verify chain discounts.
  • Comparing deals: BOGO 50% off vs $5 off $25: BOGO = 12.5% off, $5 off = 20% off. Always compare effective percentages, not advertised percentages.
  • Tax on discounted price: Sales tax is usually applied to the discounted price, not the original. The final total = (price x (1-discount)) x (1+tax).
