What is an auto lease calculator?

An auto lease calculator estimates the monthly payment for leasing a car. Unlike buying (where you finance the full purchase price), a lease finances only the vehicle's depreciation over the lease term, plus a finance charge on the adjusted cap cost and residual value. Inputs include the negotiated price, residual percentage (set by the leasing company based on residual value at lease end), money factor (the lease equivalent of APR — divide by 2400 to convert), down payment, trade-in, and term in months. Our auto lease calculator handles all of these and shows the depreciation and finance components separately.

Auto Lease Calculator

Typical: 60% at 36 mo, 55% at 39 mo, 50% at 48 mo

MF = APR / 2400 (e.g. 6% APR = 0.0025)

Monthly lease payment:

$449.69

Equivalent APR:

6.00%

Adjusted cap cost:

$31,800.00

Residual value:

$20,300.00

Depreciation / month:

$319.44

Finance charge / month:

$130.25

Total of payments:

$18,189.00

Total cost (incl upfront):

$18,189.00

Formula: monthly = (adjusted cap cost − residual) / months + (adjusted cap cost + residual) × money factor. Money factor ≈ APR / 2400. Excess mileage typically charged at $0.20-0.30/mi at lease end. Our auto lease calculator does not include sales tax (varies by state and is paid on each monthly payment).

An auto lease calculator is a free car-shopping tool that estimates the monthly payment for leasing a vehicle. Our auto lease calculator uses the standard lease formula: monthly = (adjusted cap cost - residual value) / months + (adjusted cap cost + residual value) × money factor. It accepts MSRP, negotiated price, residual percentage, money factor, term, down payment, and trade-in equity, then breaks the payment into depreciation and finance components.

How it works

How to calculate monthly car lease payment

Our auto lease calculator uses the standard depreciation + finance charge formula to find monthly lease payments from MSRP, negotiated price, residual value, and money factor.

  1. 1

    Enter MSRP and negotiated price

Type the manufacturer's suggested retail price (sticker) and your negotiated price (cap cost base). Negotiating 5-10% below MSRP is typical. The auto lease calculator uses the negotiated price, not MSRP, for cap cost.

  2. 2

Add fees, down payment, and trade-in

Type the acquisition + documentation fees. Add your down payment and trade-in equity as cap cost reductions — both lower your monthly payment.

  3. 3

Enter residual value and money factor

Type the residual percentage of MSRP (set by the leasing company; typically 60% at 36 mo). Type the money factor (the APR equivalent — divide any quoted APR by 2400 to get MF, e.g. 6% APR = 0.0025 MF).

  4. 4

Pick lease term and mileage allowance

Choose 24, 36, 39, or 48 months and select annual mileage (typically 12,000 mi/yr). Mileage above the allowance costs $0.20-0.30/mi at lease end — important to consider if you drive more than average.

  5. 5

    Read the result

The auto lease calculator shows the monthly payment broken into depreciation and finance charge components, plus the total of payments and total cost. The equivalent APR is shown as MF × 2400 for comparison with loan rates.
