Percent Off — Direct Answers

Direct answers for the most-searched percent-off queries:

20% off $50
$40. Save $10.
25% off $80
$60. Save $20.
30% off $200
$140. Save $60.
Stacked discounts: 30% + 20%
Order matters. Applied to $100: 30% first = $70, then 20% = $56 (total 44% off). Or 20% first = $80, then 30% = $56. Same result for multiplicative.
How to calculate percent off?
Sale price = Original × (1 − Discount%). For 25% off $80: 80 × 0.75 = $60.
What’s the difference between “percent off” and “percent of”?
“X% off” means multiply by (1 − X/100). “X% of Y” means multiply by X/100. 25% off 80 = 60; 25% of 80 = 20.

Quick Answer: Sale Price at Common Discount Rates

Final price (before tax) for a $100 item at the most-searched discount rates. Click “Use this” on any row to pre-fill the calculator below.

50% off$100.00$50.00$50.00Use this →

For stacked discounts (e.g. 30% + extra 20%), the second discount applies to the already-slated price — not the original. Calculator above supports this.

Common Sale Scenarios — Worked Examples

Concrete worked math for the discounts shoppers actually see — BOGO, Black Friday, clearance, and stacked coupons. Starting from a $80 item unless noted.

ScenarioEffective discountYou saveFinal priceQuick formula
Buy One Get One 50% Off (BOGO 50%)25%$20 (2 items @ $80 each)$120 total ($60 + $20)$80 + $80 × 0.5
Buy One Get One Free (BOGO free)50%$80$80 total (2 items for the price of 1)$80 + $0
Black Friday "40% off original $150"40%$60$90$150 × 0.6
Clearance 70% off (then 10% coupon)73%$58.40$21.60$80 × 0.3 × 0.9
Stacked: 30% off + extra 20% coupon44%$35.20$44.80$80 × 0.7 × 0.8
Add 15% tip on already-discounted bill— (tip, not discount)—$92 (e.g. 20% off $80 + 15% tip = $64 + $9.60)$80 × 0.8 × 1.15
Employee discount 30% on already-sale item51%$40.80$39.20$80 × 0.7 × 0.7

Stacked discounts multiply, they don’t add. Two 20% coupons do not equal 40% off — they equal 36% off (0.8 × 0.8 = 0.64). BOGO "50% off" is a 25% effective discount on two items, not 50%.

Final Cost After Discount + Sales Tax (Most-Searched States)

Discount is applied first, then sales tax is calculated on the reduced price (the same way every U.S. retailer does it). Below: a $80 item with a 25% off coupon ($60 sale price), then state sales tax.

Tax rates are 2026 estimates from state Departments of Revenue. Some cities (e.g. Seattle, Chicago, NYC) add their own local tax on top. Clothing, groceries, and prescription drugs are tax-exempt in many states — check your state’s rules before checkout.
